Applied research, data collection & analysis

Field data collection is essential to fill in knowledge gaps, and CAMRIS often provides data collection and analysis services. This ranges from health market assessments to field surveys to sophisticated analysis and modeling. CAMRIS provides data collection services including maternal and child health, infectious diseases and other areas.

Example: South Africa

Challenge: To determine the prevalence and epidemiology of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis in South Africa and to enable the development of strategies to control this growing and costly public health threat.

Solution: CAMRIS, working with South African experts, carried out a nationwide study of a sample (n=18,000) of sputa from tuberculosis cases in all provinces, including strain typing. Results enabled policy and decision makers to understand the prevalence of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, epidemiology of MDR substrains, and other operational anomalies in the handling of specimens and in the diagnosis and reporting of TB cases.

Sustainable development

CAMRIS has worked to improve development programs for economic growth and institutional strengthening in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Intitiatives included:

  • Small and medium enterprise (SME) development, including institutional strengthening, economic planning, budget analysis, sectoral analysis, and marketing analysis.
  • Social sector development, including strengthening educational programs, social service programs, and modernizing institutions at all levels.
  • Agriculture and rural development, including alternative development to promote substitutes for agricultural illicit drug production.
  • Promotion of trade and exports through improved planning, policies and systems
  • Financial systems, including modernization of information systems, management processes, laws, regulations, procedures, training, and monitoring and evaluation. Past work also includes budgeting, human resources management, and public sector planning.

In Peru, CAMRIS provided technical services for USAID’s Alternative Development Program designed to reduce coca cultivation by supporting viable alternatives for licit livelihoods. CAMRIS provided support in the areas of operations research and knowledge management to identify better ways to achieve sustainable impact in promoting licit economic activities, strengthening agricultural research, livestock, agricultural cooperatives, sugar diversification, regional development, and housing.
